The Growing Trend of Indoor Greenery: How Plants Are Taking Root in Our Homes
The Healing Power of Nature
Research has repeatedly shown that nature, even just observing it, has a significant positive impact on mental health. Amidst a year filled with mental turmoil and limited outdoor access, the concept of bringing nature indoors has become a necessity.
Interior designer and Netflix’s Queer Eye star, Bobby Berk, highlights, “People are now more willing than ever to integrate live plants into their living spaces.”
The Rise of Plant Parenthood
“Individuals who have never owned plants before are not just exploring them for the first time but are deeply engaging with them,” states Eliza Blank, founder and CEO of direct-to-consumer plant retailer The Sill. Since March, The Sill has witnessed a surge in both average order size and value. Blank shares, “We’ve had customers tell us, ‘I bought my first plant in April, and now I have 70.’” This growing interest in plant parenthood is mirrored on Instagram, with plant-focused accounts experiencing exponential growth.
The increasing popularity of plant parenthood signifies a shift towards a more nurturing and sustainable lifestyle. People are not just buying plants for aesthetic purposes but are also embracing the therapeutic benefits of caring for living organisms.
Anticipating Growth in 2021
Anticipation for indoor greenery is projected to soar even higher in 2021. A report by market research firm Technavio forecasts a substantial increase in the flower and ornamental plant market. Consequently, The Sill plans to expand its offerings, introducing more rare and unique plants to meet the rising demand.
Moreover, 2021 will witness larger plants gracing homes. Both The Sill and New York City-based subscription plant retailer Horti will offer larger plants for sale, with Horti upgrading its infrastructure and relocating to a larger space. Additionally, Bloomscape, another plant e-tailer, will launch an outdoor plant category.
As people spend more time at home, they seek to create environments that promote well-being and tranquility. The presence of plants not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of a space but also improves air quality and reduces stress levels.
Influencing Home Decor Palettes
In the upcoming year, our craving for greenery will shape home decor palettes. “Earthy tones and nature-inspired colors have dominated the design world this year and will continue to gain momentum in 2021,” predicts Berk. The paint brand Dulux has named a tan hue called “Brave Ground” as its color of the year for 2021. The Sill also intends to introduce earthy tones into its line of planters next year, aiming to create tranquil and nurturing spaces.
This trend reflects a broader cultural shift towards embracing nature and sustainability. As awareness of environmental issues grows, people are increasingly seeking ways to incorporate nature into their daily lives and surroundings.
