There’s nothing quite like sinking into a bath with water as salty as pasta water. The sensation of becoming a human noodle after a long day of working at a laptop is pure bliss. Whether you’re aiming for relaxed limbs, softer skin, or a touch of luxury, the right bath salts can transform your bathing experience and offer numerous benefits for your well-being.
“Bath salts are typically composed of magnesium sulfate, also known as Epsom salt, or Dead Sea salt,” explains Marisa Garshick, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist. “They dissolve in bathwater and are believed to provide various benefits such as stress relief, reducing joint pain, muscle stiffness, anxiety, headaches, and addressing skin conditions like dry skin and eczema.”
While further research is needed to fully validate these claims, the joy of soaking in a warm bath is undeniable. According to a small study, taking a warm bath can reduce stress and uplift mood. If bath salts can enhance this experience, why not incorporate them?
What to Look for in Bath Salts
When selecting bath salts, you’ll typically encounter options made with either Epsom salt or sea salt, each offering unique advantages. Epsom salt, comprising magnesium sulfate, acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. “Magnesium helps reduce inflammation caused by E-selectin, a molecule contributing to skin inflammation,” says Dendy Engelman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist. Engelman further notes that magnesium can enhance overall skin health by reducing inflammation.
On the other hand, sea salts are rich in minerals not typically found in Epsom salt. “Sea salts contain magnesium along with various other mineral salts like potassium, calcium chloride, sodium, and bromide,” explains Francesca Fusco, MD, a board-certified dermatologist. “For individuals with inflammatory skin conditions like eczema, soaking in Dead Sea salts may decrease inflammation and improve hydration,” she adds, citing a 2005 clinical trial published in the International Journal of Dermatology.
Regardless of your preference, ensure that the primary ingredients—whether Epsom salt or Dead Sea salt—are listed at the top of the product list, advises Dr. Garshick.
Many bath salts are scented using synthetic or natural fragrances, such as essential oils, or a combination of both. However, individuals with sensitive skin should be cautious with additives, as they may cause irritation or allergic reactions. Lavender, a popular scent, can induce relaxation and aid sleep, while invigorating scents like ginger and eucalyptus offer an energizing boost.
How to Use Bath Salts
Using bath salts is simple! Once you have your salts, pour the recommended amount into warm bathwater. Dr. Garshick recommends soaking for up to 15 minutes unless directed otherwise, and using bath salts up to three times per week.
